recently built a new system and CPU-Z shows my CPU running at 1600MHz with the multiplier at 6, bus speed at 266. Very weird though, sometimes it jumps to 2.4GHz but most of the time it stays at 1.6GHz. my mobo is gigabyte P35-DS3R rev2.

Oh not this again. It's speedstep; it decreases the CPU speed and voltage when you're not using it. I've had no problems overclocking with it on as long as I don't use auto voltage on my P35-DS3L.

sorry for my lack of knowledge. so how does it work with setting the voltage manually, where do i change it and how do i know what to set the voltage at?

If you don't plan on overclocking your system, it's best to leave the voltage settings alone. You can disable speedstep in the BIOS though if it bothers you. Then your system will run at 2.4Ghz all the time.

That board should be able to push your chip to 3.0 easy. Just increase your fsb to 333 and make sure your memory settings are fine.

Even at stock voltages, 3.0 should be fine, therefore, you wouldn't need to play around with voltage.

So, 3.0 when maxed, and 2.0 with speedstep. If you want to turn this off, just DISABLE the C1E option in bios.

If you plan on overclocking and you are asking what voltage (since every CPU is different) or what/where SpeedStep/C1E are you:

A) Have not read the guide.
B) Have not read your manual.

and by conclusion:

C) Should not overclock.

I'd go back and finish A and B before I attempted C. Knowledge is power.

Computer Philosophy 101: "If you don't even know what SpeedStep is, should you be playing with the Bios?"

------------------------------ Which Chip? Well, it depends on which set of thieving b@stardz you choose to support: The ones who use insider trading to enrich themselves while running their company into the ground? Or the ones who illegally pay vendors to not support the first group?
