Looked everywhere and I can't be the only idiot trying to do this, so I must be the one who isn't getting something right.
Want: in my home - Domain Server, File Server, Web Server and email server.
Set those up as Virtual Machines on an older IBM 445 4 socket 32GB Server (free from our datacenter). I also have 2 PCs and 2 laptops. Cable modem with built in router (think this is part of the problem since I cannot disable the router features just the DHCP). For some reason, I am unable to get the DNS pass through and have the client PCs pull IP's from the DHCP server.
The last piece is creating the user accounts for AD so all the files are stored in the massive RAID array I put in there. I was hoping to keep all my important and AV files in a central location so any client PC can grab them as well as my custom HTPC for watching movies on the LCD. I get so close sometimes, but then end up feeling like I rolled all the way back down the hill.
Any advice or if you can point me in the right direction, I can't find any books that address this specific setup. I can do this in an office, just not here!!! AAARRRGHHH. It has already caused the death of one laptop being tossed out the 3nd floor window. (no worries, it was a 386 from 1991.)
i like you intend to do the same thng, for an AD (or at least a standard) you will require a windows server OS, preferable after 2000, ideally 2003 or 2008.
