Hi, im having an annoyance with a sound i hear coming from my pc..The problem that im having is that everytime i click on an icon on my pc such as my documents , my pictures, my computer or any program i click to open i suddenly hear a quick static or low whirly sound.. ..This sound only happens when i click to open something..It sounds sort of like a half second static sound when i click on something...I still hear the windy sound when im not clicking on anything but when i go and click on something it makes the static sound .Its not my video card becuase it's fanless and it's not my cpu fan because i tested it by turning it off..I have left my pc on for the last 4 months and not hardly turning it off.Could it be the power supply that is causing this ?

Someone told me it was the sb or nb fan ...here is a pic of the 3 fans in my computer ..I dont see no nb fan or sb fan on my mobo so how is it that the whir sound could come from there ? I think it's a sinkless nb or sb fan and can that be replaced like a normal fan ? Here are my pc specs but im not sure if it has a nb or sb fan ? Im running vista and here are my pc my specs - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc [...] R1002_USEN

I'm 99.99% sure it's your hard drive. Because it "only happens when I click to open something". To test it, find like a 100MB worth of data an copy / paste it on in another folder. See if it makes that static / whir noise.

I'm guessing you just have an old or crappy hard drive. They can be quite annoying.

You can run manufacturer diagnostics on the hard drive.

I get static sounds from my computer from Windows when I click an icon. You can turn those sounds off if you like.

Actually i have a very good quality hard drive running on my windows vista...My hard drive info -

Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 HDT725040VLA360 400GB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive. 7200RPM Speed, 16MB Cache, SATA 3.0Gb/s Interface, and OEM

How do i turn off the static sounds and where is the silent mode option in power options ?

Are you talking about system sounds? If that's the case then...

It's not a silent or power option, it's a sound scheme option. In XP you:

Go to Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Click the "Sounds" tab
Now disable what ever is annoying you.
(I don't have Vista, but I'm pretty sure there process would be similar)

If that is not the problem, then it's going to be a HDD, fan, or optical drive. If the PSU is ticking and causing sparks (static) - you have trouble and need to remove and replace it immediately.

Even though I mentioned a fan as the cause, I seriously doubt it is the cause since you would most likely always hear the ticking sound if it was a fan. Most fans are always on at a set speed (with the exception of the CPU and GPU fan which spin faster to remove heat from the device)

The noise you hear is caused from cheap speakers or onboard sound.

Guess I should have come to that conclusion as soon as I saw the pictures of his PC. I'd guess that it's an HP by the colors of the sound ports on the back of the case.

He could have sh*^ drivers too. My ASUS onboard sound messes up every once in a while to the point where it sounds really staticy (probably not a real word) and it requires me to switch from headphone to a two speaker setup.

looks like some kind of bestec psu. Those don't make a peep unless they are super loaded. Is this noise on the speakers? With onboard audio you can sometimes even here scrolling a webpage....Either way that psu should not make much noise....not even much fan noise....

I see an Hp personal media bay :p i think....

The speakers i have are altec lansing but they are definitely not making any static noise because i disconnected them..The sound comes from within my pc ..I dont hear it when i have my ear next to the case and i click but when im sitting on my chair and i click i do hear it..My pc is on the floor...Im going to go ahead and replace the power supply and see if it goes away if not then i will reolce the hd with a new one of the same brand..

Possibly your internal speaker then. Does your monitor have speakers on it? Wierd you dont hear the noise with your ear on the case but you hear it from the chair. Maybe your monitor has a defect?

maybe a hard drive seek? that can resonate and make it hard to tell where it is....
