From what I have read of the specifications of these HD recorders, I conclude that
they are a major ripoff by Sony.
NO DIGITAL INPUTS.
Afraid of the MPAA and their own corporate brethern apparently. Not even an I-Link,
Sony's own name for FireWire. I don't receive any over-the-air HD broadcasts and
use a cable PVR which has FireWire outputs. I won't bother with any HD satellite
receivers that don't offer a FireWire output.
Although not yet available here, I can't see how a Cable Card will work with HD.
Isn't HD sent in a compressed format by the cable companies, implying that the
box must not only authorize the channel, but decode the video? I cannot imagine
that a Cable Card will decode HD programming.
So what good are these hard drive HD recorders? Without a FireWire (2-way) port
they are useless to me.
