Internet connected but no browser access

Hello,
My computer won't allow my browsers to connect to the internet. I have used wired and wireless connections in which I can use my Yahoo Messenger however IE8 and Firefox cannot find any webpage.
At first it was just Firefox that wouldn't browse, and I switched to IE (don't know which version, but it was old) as a temporary fix. A few days later I updated windows and now IE (currently 8) won't browse either. I've tried to system restore in hopes that it would rectify the situation but no such luck, it keeps telling me it cannot complete and no changes have been made.
Any help would be much appreciated.
