Hellooo and its a pleasure to finally be able to write something in this forum. I have been coming here to read up on latest updates.

Well, recently i feel the need to overclock my new cpu. I am new to all this and my CPU is technically my life. I would want to be pointed to the right direction right from the basics. I would not mind reading a whole bunch and most importantly i want to know what could go wrong, or long term effects.

Sorry for being such a noob

Sam

There's some good stickies in the CPU section. That's a great starting point.

Please specify what processor you have and what socket it is.
AMD overclocking is different from Intel overclocking.
This may help:

Thank you for the very fast response.

I am using an Intel processor. I copied this down this from My Computer properties. I hope it is of some help

E4500 @ 2.20 Ghz

I am using a dual core processor and Vista operating system with 4Gb Ram. I think i got a bad choice of a processor as after leaving my computer on for a couple of nights, with two users running, my computer's cpu usage (as seen on windows task bar) goes up to 100% for both cores though the ram remains at 30+% most of the time.

Please let me know if there is anything i should be careful of. The links i was referred to were really complicated. Now i doubt if i should even overclock.

Sorry

one of the first links is a step by step guide for first time overclockers
(i've been thinking about overclocking a new computer. this would be my first time and this article helped me out a ton)

you should go check it out

Is this a system you put together yourself or something like a Dell or Compaq? Pre-built systems generally don't have any options in the bios that'd enable you to overclock your CPU. Also, most pre-built computers have a lot of crap pre-installed with Windows that runs constantly in the background unless removed and can definitely drag down system performance significantly.

Your processor should be plenty powerful for most tasks. What do you mainly do with your computer? If it's gaming, then your choice of video card will matter much more than the CPU anyways.

At idle, your computer usage should be 0-1%. I would investigate in Task Manager what is causing 100% CPU usage.

My computer usage after idling for a while, sky rockets to almost 100%. Task manager unfortunately does not show much about CPU usage. What i noted was, explorer.exe had the highest usage of 20 and the rest were 0 My computer is from Dell. I have removed loads of unwanted programs from my computer as well as windows startup files so i have only basic programs running ie Kaspersky, Zone Alarm and Msn Messenger..

My computer is mainly used for online gaming, namely counter strike. However, as i play, i have absolutely no problems with the games or cpu usage. Could it be that the CPU slows down due to more then one user logged on at the same time? I suspect this is the problem. I will start my overclocking this weekend. Thank you all for the responses.

Thank you evongugg, megame255, XshyguyX, rsetter1, boonality and all.

Sam

PS: would anyone be extra kind as to give me their msn address so i could refer to them incase something would go wrong? just in case. Dont worry i would not be a bother
