Desktop icons won t open

i am unable to open any of my icons on desktop please do help me out.

The grandkids were over and we downloaded Angry Birds and some other games. When they left, I went in to uninstall the games........that is when my shortcuts stopped working. Could I have deleted something that caused this problem?
