Hi, I am not sure if this is the right place for this but I am having trouble with my Compaq Presario V5000 and it will not boot up. All I get is a black screen. When I go into Phoenix Bios, I try and check the HDD and it freezes at 20%. I have tried to use gparted from a bootable disc and it will work and show me the hard drive and let me format it. Then again, I am not sure because I have trouble booting other "on the fly" bootable OS's sometimes. I am confused. Does it sound like a hardrive or motherboard? 5 weeks before I had this problem I bought new memory but I tested each stick with memtest+ and I never got any errors and it ran for 8 hours each.

Any ideas, suggestions?

you do not state the make of your hdd,,but,,go to the manuf's web site dn'load the diags run them ,, if you get zero errors ,, then see if you can write zeros to the whole hdd,if successful you will be ok,,if not need new hdd,for instance Western Digital's diags have to be on a bootable floppy...:)
