I just built a brand new computer.

current setup
asus striker 2 extreme 790i ultra sli
1000 watt psu ultra X3
Q6600 OC 2.52 ghz water cooled 27 C to 32 C fsb clock in nvida control panel is 280 mhz
640 gb western digital 7200 rpm
4 gb ddr 3 1066 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231149)
1 9800 GTX EVGA overclocked to 725 mhz ( I overclocked it in the nvidia control panel) memory is at 1100mhz
and shader clock is at 1688 mhz
1 dvd drive
I water cooled my north bridge and CPU Cpu is usally under
30 C and northbridge is usally under 35 C

I overclocked to 2.52 with the tool in the bios but it wont go past that so I believe I have to do it manually involving a lot of math which im fine with.

I honestly have never overclocked and have no idea what Im doing im good with computer so I could do it if somebody helps me.

1 month old or not. There's plenty of stickies in this section for a reason.

For Q6600 overclocking read this guide:

For 9800 GTX get RivaTuner or use NVIDIA CP.
Read this :

EDIT: There was a also guide on TomsHardware a few days ago.

After you've read these guides if you still have questions ask.

Good luck.

Well one thing that may be holding you back is the fact that when you overclock the cpu, you also push the memory.

Get cpu-z and see what speed your ram is running at(4th tab over called memory). Do not be alarmed if you memory shows a lower number. DDR shows half the speed so DDR2 800 shows as 400 and yours should show as 533, if its over that then thats your problem

Look in the bios for a memory divider if your over 533 its most likely you have 2 mem for every 1 cpu. You need to try a lower setting and see if the ram is now under 533. Then once is lower(lets say 400) try to set your cpu fsb to 333. That would give you 3.0. Check cpu-z and make sure your ram is not pushed too far(how far is too far varies from memory to memory).

Once you get a overclock you are happy with. make sure to test it for stability with Prime95

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Other [...] me95.shtml

Prime95 will run your cpu at 100% load on all cores. so while this is running you should also monitor the temps. The best way to do this is with Core Temp. Try to keep the temps under 70(60 is preferable and many would never want to see over that. your call). If it goes over that, drop the clocks or get a better heatsink. do NOT add voltage if you do not have to. if your board does this on its own, set it your self. 1.25 is the stock voltage if your cpu is a G0 Revision.

So that means effective speeds are 560 x 2 = 1120MHz. You have DDR3 1066MHz, so you have OCed your ram a bit. This generally isn't a good idea because you're adding more variables to the process.

Read the guide here and follow the directions carefully. Although the motherboard and ram may be different, the concepts still applies.

You have DDR3 RAM. It's rated for 1066MHz.
You are now running it at 1120MHz. They probably can't run the same timings at this speed.
Go into BIOS and fix the RAM:FSB ratio.
Now its something like 2:1 (533:266).
For 3.0GHz it should be something like 8:5 (533:333).
For 3.6GHz it should be something like 4:3 (533:400).
(You want to keep running the RAM at 1066MHz DDR or at a 533MHz frequency).

the striker 2 extreme bios over has a AI overclocker so I think when I over clocked 5 % which is 2.52 it also increase my mem should I put it back to normal or default

You should OC manually for the best OC.

+1
@OP
These "AI" overclocker tools tend to overvolt heavily causing a lot more stability issues than manual step by step increments in BIOS. They should be disabled in BIOS.

For 3.0GHz start at a Vcore of 1.15V and run Prime95 on all 4 cores for 12 hours to ensure it's stable.
You shouldn't go above say 1.50V in any case. A better limit is 110% VID.
Since you have water cooling you should make sure your temperatures are below 55°C.
Above that you risk tubing damage (if you have high quality tubes you might risk higher temperatures).

When you're done with the CPU (say you're happy with 3.6GHz)
Fix the RAM:FSB ratio so it's closest to 1066MHz but still under that value.

The guides we posted are very well written and you should really read them (all of this information is already in them).
