my build

cpu-e6750
cpu cooler- asus silent square
ram- 2gb corsair xms2 5-5-5-15
mobos - p5b
gpu - 8600gts
psu - coolermaster 500watts

yea i gota whole buncha questions about upgrades....the 8600gts stinks so im planning to get a new gpu, i really like the ati 3870 which is $300 here, or should i get the 8800gt for a mere $25 more? i know the 8800gt is better but the ati has dx10.1 and i love gddr4. Im thinking of getting the 3870 and then waiting the the 9 series to upgrade again. More questions! I think my power supply is crap, when i bought it i had no idea about the 12v or the other rails i just thought the watts was important, but now i found out that you should get a psu with a good 12 v rail for gpus. My cooler master is 18a on 12 v so im thinking about getting the corsair 450 that has around 32a on 12 v. Lastly, should i get a gpu water cooler? im thinking of this

it doesnt fit on to 8800 series so i would be limited to the 3870 if i get it, but does i cool well? and is it silent.

oh yes im not shopping online or in America so stuff is rare and expensive, if you suggest me to get something other than what i mentioned then probability is that its not available here. But if you really think my choices suck then suggest me some other parts and ill see if their available here.

The 3870 is a good choice as well as the power supply you have in mind.I cannot give you advice on the gpu water cooler though. I like your quote "you get what you pay for".

Interesting mofo. :D Let me get this straight. You already have that pc up & running & are thinking of upgrading the GPU? Since the mobo is old-ish. I know I know, but you'd be surprised to see someone would still buy P965.

The Corsair 450 VX is better than the CoolerBastard 500 in terms of quality. It can power 8800GT/HD3870 w/o breaking a sweat.

DX10.1 is not superior to DX10. There is not significant improvement between the two, no code efficiencies for improvements, or a long enough features list to make it worthwhile right now to acquire. Further, you will need Vista SP1 in order to use DX 10.1:

If you want the 3870 go get it. Personally, I think you'd be better off getting the 8800GT, which would mean you can hold off on a PSU a bit longer, save a bit more in terms of dollars and wait for the 9 series.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Not to mention the fact that the Coolermaster 500 is complete junk and should be changed as soon as possible, regardless of any other considerations.

k im probably gonna get the 8800gt then...but one last thing, does the ati 3870 come with free HL2:EP2?

When i wanted to buy a computer from the start i knew i couldnt afford the 8800gtx/gts($400 for the gts 320mb, and the gtx unavailable) or the 2900xt ($480 for 512) so i got the 8600gts($210) hoping to play crysis on full at 800 x 600 or 960 x 600 no AA. I didnt consult the tomshardware forums and got a piece of crap!
