First off, hello- I just registered here, so, hi! I run an E4400 on a 650i Ultra (stock cooling), 8800GT with an accelero S1 heatsink. Vista Ultimate 32 bit

I've been overclocking my CPU a little, bit (2.0 --> 2.75 Ghz) and this morning I wanted to see how hot it'd run if I pushed it up to 3.0 Ghz (Under 100% load its about 60ºC at 2.75 Ghz). Yea, I know it's hot, but it doesn't get that hot unless I'm stress-testing. When I game it's only about 50-57ºC. Getting an Arctic Cooler 7 shortly.

So I shut down my computer, boot up, get into the BIOS and change my FSB to 1200 Mhz (1200 / 4 * 10 = 3000 Mhz). Save and exit, boot up.
I notice my temperatures hadn't changed at all while idle, so I open up CoreTemp + CPU-Z + Prime95 to monitor everything while I do a little stress testing, but before the testing starts, WTF My CPU is clocked at 2.0 Ghz, and it says my FSB is at a stock speed of 800 Mhz.

I thought it might've just been Intel's SpeedStepping, so I start the test anyways, but much to my dismay my clock speeds were still at 800 Mhz / 2 Ghz (FSB / CPU respectively). I figure I'll reboot and see what my BIOS said, maybe I accidentally exited without saving?

So I reboot, get into the BIOS and it says my FSB is still at 1200 Mhz. If I try lowering it back down a 2.75 Ghz CPU speed like it was at before, my computer still says its at 2.0 Ghz though, so I can't seem to bring it back up at all.

I've thought of pulling out the CMOS and try re-doing all of it, do you guys think that'd work?
My one concern about this, though, is that I've never built a computer before this one (which was almost a year ago), so I don't remember what I'd need to do in the BIOS.
Just set up boot priority, right (CD Drive, then Hard drive)? Or would I need to do more?

Thanks your time! Oh, also, not sure what Subsection to put this under, so Ill just go with General.

its your overclock is unstable so the motherboard reset itself to default as a safety backup procedure.try up the vcore voltage.it should boot fine.

I see...

So if I just raise that a little (How much? .005? .05?) then it should be at a good ol' 3 Ghz?

Though what I don't understand is at stock voltage, it was okay at 2.75 Ghz so why won't it change at all.

Whatever-- thanks! I'll try that shortly.

edit; I suppose I should just raise it a tad, then try again. and repeat as necessary

try to up it 1 notch at a time.it should tell you whats the default voltage.its listed as VID.

if you up the vcore above 1.45 and still fail then up the NB and FSB/PLL/VTT voltage.

It's stock at 1.3250 volts, but alright! I'll go try, thank you =)

your CPU seem like mine one but with more cache.e2160 also with VID 1.325v:)

Well it says 1.3250 in CoreTemp, but in the BIOS it was actually at 1.28

I tried pushing it up to 1.30 in the BIOS, and the FSB from 1.2 to 1.3 and it's still doing the same exact thing-- stuck at 2.0 Ghz

Suppose I should raise it higher, I will later. It's such a tedious process =(

push it to 1.45v and NB+FSB +0.2v.try that.

I can't seem to find the settings for the northbridge voltage, but I put my CPU up to 1.45 and my FSB is at whatever.

Still stuck at stock clock speeds... Does my motherboard just suck for 'serious' OCing?

How do I go about getting it back to maybe a 2.75 Ghz clock speed? Like I said before on stock voltage and everything it worked just fine.

try lower the system multiplier or cpu multiplier to 6x then up the FSB to 333 see what happen.

You mean 1333?

and if I do that that's only 1.9Ghz, lol. Lower than my stock speed.

you might try resetting the board and reconfig from scratch to make sure some pesky voltage or bios setting isnt throwing you off.

cheers,

josh

Yea, I just went back in.

Manually loaded all the defualts. Toggled them a few times. Pressed F7 for the BIOS to load the defaults itself. Upped my FSB speed back to where it was before this whole mess started.

Suppose I can live with it being at 2.75 Ghz.

Edit: Thanks for the help, though =)

its cool.good to see someone who is not speed/oc addict(not like me:()

Haha, well I would be.

but I don't feel like figuring this out right now. I'm new to over clocking and I just lost my job, so if I kill my CPU / mobo, it might be a while before I can get a computer back, and my computer = my lifeblood.

you lost your job?your part time job you mean?lol

Yea, part time.

I'm still in highschool, though I graduate in less than a month. But my boss thought it'd be a good idea to give my 1 shift a week to the old bus boy because she allegedly promised him he could gave the night back when he quit. Really though it's just because they're both Greek (he even admitted she never said that to him).
