I am wondering, I see alot of folks saying the 6400AAKS is the best. What about the other sizes of the AAKS line from WD? wouldnt they be equal in performance? Anyone with any info pls respond and thanks in advance. I am looking for a fast drive for video and pic storage. dont need a ton of space. i have a 36.7 raptor for games and OS.

I have alot of the 500AAKS drives, while they are a good drive i think youll find there was a decent gap between when these and the 640gb version was released so there would have been changes and developments in the meantime. All being said if your on a budget i wouldnt worry about scraping up the extra dosh for the 640gb version if you only need 500gb

It said on the WD site, a while back, that the only AAKS drive that was PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) was the 750GB. Then the notice was removed from the page. I called them to try and determine whether the 500GB was PMR and the sales guy said they all were, I pushed him, but he held his ground. I can't be sure, but I think he was lying or didn't actually know.

The 6400AAKS does appear to be PMR, based on the ~90MB/sec average read speed. I still believe the 5000AAKS is not due to the ~60BM/sec average read speed.

Since the 6400AAKS is only ~$80 and the 5000AAKS is ~$70, I can't imagine saving $10 is worth the serious drop in performance of the 5000AAKS. Not to mention the additional 140GB of space.

I would say case closed.

That's why I buy the Seagate series 7200.11 they are all PMR and except for the 320GB drive they have 32MB cache and all have a 5 year warranty.

Didn't they have a problem with failures awhile back?

The Caviar blacks are out now too which by spec look better than the AAKS, they dont seem to readily available though. They have 32mb cache up on the 16 of the AAKS and they supposedly do ~113mb/s sustained.

thanks for the replies and $10 isnt a sweat for the difference . I was merley asking cause my wife needs a smaller drive for storage then me. I was looking at the 320GB version for her and the 640 for myself. Was hoping it was atleast similar performance. My rigs specs are:
Tagan El Diablo case/w 120mm fan in rear
E4300@3.0ghz TK Big typhoon cooler and 31c Idle 46c load
Gigabyte P35 Ds3L
3GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 667 2x512 and 2x1gb
BFG 8800GT OC
WD raptor 36,7gb OS and games drive

The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3320613AS 320GB is even faster but has almost half of the reviews claiming DOA and that's a little scary.
