So I just got my EVGA 8800 gt a few days ago, and this mofo is sitting at a 58c idle (although my case isn't exactly in its full cooling mode atm, i need to do some cable management and install mew new cpu heatsink, memory heatsink, and my 140mm yate loons) and I also have both walls off my case atm to get my **** set up soon as my buddy the ups man gets here with the new merchandise within an hour or so

(i apologize for the run on sentence which is quite possibly hard to make sense of.)

Anyways what I am getting at, is from what I have read on newegg reviews, the cooling on this kinda blows, and from my experience so far, i concur.

Now I have read that some stock cooling needs to have thermal pasting reapplied. Would this be a good solution ? Or would squandering more money on a new cooling unit be recommended ?
And what are some good cooler recommendations if advised to get a new cooler be ?

You do not need extra cooling for the 8800 GT. Trust me.

Down load and learn to use Riva Tuner, it will come in handy for many things. One of which is setting your 8800 GT's fan speed to ~45 when you power on. This will probably shave ~10C off the idle temp. The Nvidia software will adjust fan speed too.

I crank my fan speed up to ~70 while gaming. My 8800 GT never gets above 78C.

Keep in mind that these cards are rated for up to 115C so if you keep it below 90C you are doing fine.

the akimbo cooler from evga does a very good job, its easy to install and with the bios update it keeps the card very cool
it can be found on their website for $39.

Max Temp under full load after 10 minutes of unreal 3(temperatures are similar with other titles: crysis, COD 4, sup com, bioshock)

Stock Cooler Auto Speed No OC - 81C

Stock Cooler Auto Speed OC 700/975 - 83C

Stock Cooler 100% fan No Oc - 65C

Stock Cooler 100% fan OC 700/975 - 67C

Akimbo Auto Speed No Oc - 65C

Akimbo Auto Speed OC 700/975 - 65C

Akimbo 70% fan 700/975 - 55C

*Stock cooler at 100% sounds like a hair dryer and i can hear it from the next room......
*Akimbo is inaudible over the rest of my fans

Idle temp with new cooler is in the mid to low 40C with fan at 60%,depending on ambient
Idle temp when fan speed set to auto is mid to low 50C

I wouldnt go as far as to say you do NOT need a new cooler for the 8800GT. My first one, an EVGA, overheated while playing CoD4 on max. Screen filled with red and black pixelation, rebooted the PC and everything was fine, but I could not play CoD4 or Hellgate London anymore, as both of these games were kicking the card up to 86c average according to Rivatunner. I RMA'd that card and put a Thermaltake DuoOrb on the replacement, idles at 39c-42c and has NEVER reached 50c under full load, 3+ hours of any game.

HR-03 is an amazing cooler, look around on google for reviews. It surpasses many after market coolers when in passive mode. With a fan on it, it's just "the best". Note the size, though. Also excuse the appearance of my P182..

My temps were before: 50/80 @600/900
Now: 49/54 @675/950

My XFX 8800GT Extreme 640/1900 reached 83C full load and idle at 59C on my Antec 900 (ambient room temp is 28-30C) case and I can feel a bit laggy on Crysis even some peoples claim that below 125C is a safe temp. I decided to replaced the stock cooler with Thermaltake DuOrb and now my full load temp under Crysis is 55C max and idle at 43C. I'm very happy with it.

Although you can try to use RivaTuner to set the fan speed up to 100% and the temp will drop to around 70-75 but it will make a loud of noise.

What is the noise level of the duo orb ? On my XFX the stock cooler is noisy.... I got no problem with temp but I was wondering if this was quieter. I guess Rivatuner or other videocard software could help me reduce the noise. I'll try that, but was wondering if this could be another solution.

1. The noise level of the DuOrb is pretty quiet while maintaining cooling performance.
2. You can use RivaTuner to set your vga fan speed higher (niose level increase) or lower (noise level decrease) according to your needs.

Depending on the cooler itself, if you set the fan speed to too low, the temp will rise, in other way the noise reduce and vice versa.
