It's not about trusting what they say, it's the physics of surface area. Larger fans push and pull more air at lower speeds that smaller fans do at higher speeds.
The 120mm Scythe you used as an example outputs 110.31cfm.
This 90mm Scythe: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] Tpk=scythe has a max output of 55.5cfm, half of what a fan that is 30% larger pushes.
The larger fan will push more air, and likely be quieter than having 2 smaller fans. So the 120mm is a win-win situation. Not to mention it could possibly draw less power too (not like that's a very sizeable draw anyhow).
