My CPU is Flipping Out!!!

Hey gang. Just put together a new system with an AMD X2 4000+ cpu. I'm seeing some crazy stuff in CPU-Z. The core voltage, core speed, and core multiplier are fluctuating. They go up and down constantly. Normally the clock speed should be 2.1GHz and the multiplier 10.5, but looking at it right now shows 1.0GHz and the multiplier at 5. This happens even under load. I've checked all the MB settings and overclocking is disabled. Is this thing fried?

  1. Could be the Cool 'n Quiet by AMD:

If it's still doing it under load - fluctuating, etc. then you may have a piece of faulty hardware. You can also try resetting your CMOS just in case you changed a setting in there.
  2. What happens even under load? What load are you using? I think it's the Cool 'n Quiet, as rgeist554 said. Don't screw with it because of some phantom problem and screw it up. If you want to test it, run Prime95 25.5 and look at it.
  3. Take it to a job site and see if someone with a bulldozer will run over it for you. Take pictures too. I want to see this.
  4. Boot into the bios and disable cool n quiet then reboot and see if it is now ok.

Jeez hairycat101 ... reel mature of you. Click your heels eh?
