Basic PC Components for Build

I am looking to put together a PC, which will primarily be used for internet access and word processing for my Parents.
I was wondering if one of you techgods could point me in the right direction for components. I looked into buying a pre-built PC from Dell, but I know that I could probably get more bang for the buck if I bought everything and assembled it myself. I'm also not a big fan of integrated video.. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

  1. For a basic web surfing/word processing system, you're not going to save much (if any at all) by building it yourself. Anyway, here's my list for a budget system:

Case/PSU: Rosewill R6422 BK ATX Mid Tower Computer Case+350W Power Supply - $26.99
    Motherboard: BIOSTAR NF520-A2 AM2 - $43.99
    CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ - $45.99
    RAM - PQI 2x512Meg DDR2-667 - $22.99
    Hard Drive - WD 80 GB SATA 3.0 - $42.99
    Graphics Card - Foxconn GeForce 8400GS - $38.99
    DVD/CD Drive - LITE-ON DVD/CD-R/CD-RW - $24.99
OS - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic - $94.99
    Monitor - Hanns-G 19" Widescreen - $159.99
    Keyboard/Mouse - Logitech Black 104 Normal Keys PS/2 Standard - $13.99
    Speakers - Logitech R-10 - $9.99

Total comes to $525.89 + S&H. Not as inexpensive as it could be, but some quality components.

  2. Antec NSK4480B Mid Tower Case w/380W Power Supply - N82E16811129032 -
    Mail-in Rebate $89.99 -$30 MIR = $59.99

    ASUS P5KPL-VM Micro ATX Motherboard - N82E16813131197 - $74.99

    Intel Dual-Core E2140 Processor - N82E16819116037 - $73.99

    CORSAIR 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667 Memory - N82E16820145098 - $39.99

    Western Digital 160GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - N82E16822136075 - $49.99

    Sony NEC Optiarc 20X DVD±RW - N82E16827118003 - $24.99

Subtotal: $353.94 or $323.94 after rebate.

Although you do not prefer onboard video, you might give this a try before buying a video card. It is pretty good. I did not include keyboard/mouse monitor, or speakers, as I consider those a more personal preference type choice. The case/psu combo is very good quality.

The above machine would work well for Vista Home Basic, XP Home, or even Linux.
  3. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your input!
