i just read an article here about this card, but the only ones i can find are the 320 and the 640mb versions.

since the 8800gt is virtually completely sold out, and it appears will be for probably until next year unless you went to pay ~$350 for it, i was looking for another card to try out, and this 8800gts 512 cought my eyes. is this card going to end up like the 8800gt? release a small bunch, let the consumers wet their mouths, and then pull it off the market till later?

that makes no sense. i can buy the 640 version for about the same price as that.

Um, the 640 version isn't as good. Memory is not everything you know, but if you want to spend the same amount of money on a lesser card... go for it.

The old 640/320 is G80, the new 512 is G92. Read up on this because I'm not going to explain it. :p Basically it translates to: The GTS 512 is faster then the GTS 640/320, the GT, but slightly slower than the GTX.

Don't believe me? Check out where the 512 ranks on the benchmarks:

wasn't the 640 remade to sit on the g92? i was basing my opinion off of this assumption. or is the 512 actually the card that they promised as the "remake" ?

Reply to guitarxe

No, the 640 is just a 8800GTS G80.

To the dude who said the GTS 512 is slower than the GTX, it really isnt. It is faster as far as processing power is concerned, just its lackluster (if you could call it that) when it comes to memory BW and capacity. It pwns in shader intensive games, but loses a bit in memory intensive games.

It also loses a bit when AA is turned on, but again, that is due to its limited mem bus (only 256bit, the same as my old 9800PRO...) Had this GFX card had a 512 bus or even the same 384 as the GTX, the tables would turn in the G92 based card's advantage.

But yeah, the 8800 320 and 640 are nothing like the 512. The512 is just teh pwnage.

The 640mb you are refering to is a small refresh fo the card to have 112sp. The EVGA 8800GTS 640mb SSC Edition is the best one of those cards and if you want a 640mb it is the only real option for that. The way it goes in performance is that the EVGA 8800GTS 640mb SSC Edition is 2% - 3% faster on average than a stock 8800GT, and the 8800GTS 512mb is about 9% - 10% on average that the EVGA 8800GTS 640mb SSC Edition. Their is another pro to the 8800GTS SSC Edition over the 8800GT and it is the dual slot cooler to vent the air out of the case and it i quieter, but price/performance it is no match since they are basically the same performance wise overall.

I have calculated these % myself since I have been researching weather or not I will be getting the 8800GTS 512mb and sending back my 8800GTS SSC Edition or not since I am pretty sure my dad bought me that one for x-mas since I sent him that link as my backup card to the 3870 if it wasnt in stock...and well...yea. lol, that was before I knew about the 8800GTS 512mb being in stock so early. The 8800GT was never an option for me since I HATE single slot card coolers, but thats just me. If he did in fact get me the SSC edition I will probably just keep in since I will most likely just step up in the next few months to something else, the performance difference isnt to large, and because it wasnt my money because it was a gift price/performance doesnt matter to me.

But with that said I cannot recommend that you get that card just for the memory because as I said it is still slower, and as you said...it costs the same. I would go with the EVGA 8800GTS 512mb from newegg that is around $360. Its the best card right now imo...even though I want a 3870 for the hdmi...lol, oh decisions.

If you are curious. This is the review I found to be the best of the ones I saw and was what I used for my % calculations. It has all of the cards that matter right now on there.

Nice, I am good at OC'ing CPU's and Memory, but gfx cards is another story. I dont like OC'ing unless I am doing it in the bios or something so I dont really mess with my graphics cards that much. Sometimes I Just buy the factory OC'd ones and they suit me. Good luck with it.

ATITool doesn't have any Shader overclocking features but in RivaTuner it does. I was able to OC my card further with Riva.

Great card IMO, just not so widespread yet - haven't seen it in any EU based online stores (stores that ship to the EU arent the same), that will come undoubtedly though.
