Thanks to Nukemaster, I learned that CPU temp is measured at the geometric center on the topside of the processor integrated heat spreader.

Depending on the load, the difference between this temp and the CPU core is typical 10-15c. So, when we talk about CPU temp, which one are we referring to?

I read somewhere that the max temp of a Q6600 is 71c. Is this the temp of the CPU or the CPU core?

It depends upon the version of the Q6600. The B3 is rated for 85C, where the G0 is rated at 100C. These temps are the CPU, and not core.

As to the correlation to where you got your information, the temps you quoted are for the highest you want to run the core temps.

If ever in doubt, you can use the Intel Processor Spec Finder and research the temp requirements.

Fromur suggested URL, I found the following Thermal Specifications for Q6600:
G0 = 71c
B0 = 62.2c

This is the CPU temp and not the temp of individual core.

Strange, I read from these tech forums that many people OC their CPU way pass these temperatures under full load...

My PC:
P5E-WS, Q6600-G0, Freezer Pro 7, 2x2 GB OCZ2P8004GK, eVGA 8800 GTS-512MB, WD5000AAKS, Cosior-620W, Antec P182

I added a 4th 120mm Antec Tri-cool fan in the mid front chamber of the P182. All 4 fans are set to low.
CPU: OC: FSB=311 MHz, CPU=2.8GHz
VGA: No OC: GPU core bus=670MHz, Memory bus=972MHz

Idle
According to SpeedFan, CPU 1%, CPU=30, Core1 and Core2 = 39, Core3 and Core4 = 37. Fan=970 RPM

After running Prime95 for an hour for all 4 cores:
According to SpeedFan, CPU 100%, CPU=47-50, Core1 and Core2 = 58-63, Core3 and Core4 = 54-59. Fan=2250 RPM

I recommend that you read the Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide which will explain it in better detail than I can...

You will note on that Intel processor Identifier, the temperature referred to (the 71C temp) is the temp at which the thermal throttling is/can be activated. For this reason, Intel doesn't recommend any higher. People have that turned off and often reach higher temps.

You should also know that these temps that Intel states are RECOMMENDATIONS, and not absolute limits.

From the temps you listed, I would not be very concerned about your temps. For air cooling and overclocking, those are very reasonable temps.
