I just replaced my old STATA optical drives. I picked the the DVD/CD-ROM (not a burner) because it was well reviewed, often purchased, and had free shipping. I didn't even notice until it arrived that is was an 18X SATA drive. I've tried to google around to find out what this means without any luck.
What does 18X SATA mean?
Does it matter on my system?

I think they are most likely referring the 18x to how fast the drive will burn at. SATA guessing here again they are just referring to what the connection of the drive is i.e. ide or sata which is the cable your using to connect the drive to your motherboard.
I think your talking about 2 unrelated pieces of information for one piece of hardware.
It is probable that your drive has differing read speeds depending on the media. For example, reading a CD can be faster than a DVD. However, feel free to clarify your question if you have more data (or more sleep.)
