E6850 outperforms X6800 but costs about a quarter as much?

I'm just wondering if perhaps TigerDirect has the wrong prices listed for their chips.

The E6850 (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3354006&body=MAIN#detailspecs) costs only $365 CDN whereas the X6800 which underperforms the E model in many areas according to the benchmarking done here is listed at almost $1300 CDN (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2341568&body=MAIN#detailspecs)

What gives?

Thanks

I think you didn't understand his question. Read it again.

The top shelf X6800 was $999 per tray when released, if any retailers still have stock selling it for the price it performs at would mean a loss.

It's old tech they are trying to sell off because they have it left.

The e2180 outperforms the e6850 and the x6800 when you overclock the e2180 to 3.3. It cost me $85.00 USD. I can provide pics later but media fire is currently down for maintenance.

The x6800 is an extreme and extremes will always be over $1000 because the multiplier is unlocked; thus, making them easier to overclock. The penryn lineup isn't looking near as good for overclockers because of such a low multiplier. The Penryns will overclock fine but you will need to have one hell of a motherboard this time around.

Well, apart from both of the prices being too high, the Extreme Edition CPUs have always been priced high ~$1000, but come with an unlocked multiplier. The unlocked multiplier makes overclocking easier.

You're also forgetting that the 6850 was released July 22, 2007, and the X6800 was released July 27, 2006. A full year earlier.

I don't know why retail stores don't discount the extreme edition processors after they're obsolete to try to move them, but they don't seem to.

Because it would mean those stores would take an $800 hit.

Of course, they *shouldn't* be able to sell at all at those prices, so I'm confused why they don't drop the price and sell for a smaller loss than holding onto the processor.

But how many people are going to buy a slower processor for $1000 when you can buy a faster one for $300. So isn't it better to cut the price in half, and get some of your money back? Perhaps I'm just being foolish, though...

Many manufacturers used to offer refunds to the resellers on existing stock, at least when I sold computer hardware back in the mid 90's. Don't know what it's like now.

The stores are probably correct in assuming that there's enough clueless morons that will buy an older extreme CPU at full price without knowing there are better ones around for less money. In fact the stores almost certainly count on that to shift their old stock.
Same thing with all the die-hard AMD fanbois posting here about buying new AMD CPUs even though intel CPUs are way better performers.

Yes its right, the x6850 it was lunched before the e6850 and it only has 1000fsb againt 1333fsb of the e6850, but the reason the x6850 its more expensive is because it has the multiplier unlocked so its easier and safer to overcloked, but the e6850 is faster then x6850 at stock clock speeds, my opinium by the e6850, i have one and its amazing fast and runs very cool at 30c
