Software/applications for new built computer!

I just recently built a computer, and was wondering if there was some "MUST-HAVE" software/applications for a custom built computer?

It depends on how you use your computer. . . I develop web pages and C programs, so my list will likely be very different from yours

It depends on what direction you want to go with the computer. Development, Gaming, Data, Home control and on and on. First one must decide on an Operating system which in itself starts a broad discussion filled with personal egos. Since I was developing 32 bit apps for Win7 when I built this computer I opted for 32 bit Win7 which has wasted 10 Gb of RAM that sits idle. I should have gone 64 bit and used the total 12 Gb of RAM. Since I am a developer I must have tools to see what my apps are doing. A good network monitor program will let you see how your apps IP side is going. A good hex editor works wonders for looking into programs. I have WinMerge which is a file and directory comparison too. I use(d) subversion for version control.

But all that is moot if you want a gaming computer.
