Okay, so I just got a brand new Acer X241WSD 24" LCD from microcenter.com (http://microcenter.com/single_produc...uct_id=0263478). It is listed as having a max resolution of 1920x1200 (meaning it can do 1080p). I intend to use this to play games on my new Playstation 3. I've done all the research, and it's HDCP compliant and all that.

So when I open the box I realize I'm lacking an HDMI to DVI cable (after ordering the monitor I bought one on ebay, but it hasn't arrived yet). I figure I'll just go buy one at a store nearby and return in when my cheap cable comes. So I can't find a HDMI to DVI cable, but I get a double male HDMI cord and a HDMI to DVI adaptor.

I get home, and set it up and my PS3 defaults to 1080p as expected...but I have around 50 terrible gray, horizontal bands on my screen. So I change the resolution to 720p, and the bands go away. This is nice and all, but I got this monitor specifically so I could have 1080p. So what's wrong?

To troubleshoot, I tried connecting my laptop up to it via the DVI cable that came with the monitor. It viewed perfectly in full 1920x1200 resolution, no bands or anything. I also got my friend to try it, and it worked perfectly for him as well. That's about the only troubleshooting I could think to do. This has lead me to believe that maybe this an HDCP compliance issue. I looked up the HDMI to DVI cable I got off of ebay and it's specifically indicated as being "HDCP compliant". This would explain why the DVI cable that came with the monitor works with my laptop (why would they ship it with a non-HDCP compliant cable?), but the one I got in the store doesn't (I don't see anywhere in the packaging that even mentions HDCP). Basically it comes down to: Do cables need to be HDCP compliant? Are some cables not?

So here's something that happened yesterday: I get this Blu-ray movie (figured I'd better own at least one, now that I've got a player). Seeing as my PS3 is in 720p that's what I watch it in.

Then I turn on 1080p on my PS3. The lines/bars come back as usual. I select the bluray disc to start it...and my screen goes black, and for a brief instant there's a message that says "Source Error" (or something along those lines, can't recall exactly) then it goes black again. Turned off the PS3, tried it again, and just black.

So, what could this mean? Why's it doing this, and does it shed any light on what my 1080p problem could be?

I suspect your cable or your adapter isnt compatible. The one above is what you nee, it even says ps3 compatible. You might find a smaller one cheaper, I just did a quick search.
