you need identical drives to stripe

Your drives need to be identicle. You might get it to work but you will loose lots of space, and it will probably cause more problems down the road. Dont do it.

Neither. First, you don't NEED identical drives, though it helps. If you pair a fast drive with a slow drive, you might have been faster/better off by just using the faster drive by itself. Like with ram, it will slow down to match the speed of the slower unit. Second, it will "lose" the extra space when you AID0 it. 233GBs of space will be gone when you set up the array. 232GBs of space will be on disk one, with 232GBs of space on disk two, with 233GBs gone. Drive size should be 464GBs in size.

Depending on the age of the drives, this idea could actually be slower then running them the way you have it now. If the 250GB is an older drive, it could be quite a bit slower then your 500GB. By pairing it with the 500, the 500 will lose a lot of speed. If these are the drives you have, put the OS on the faster/newer drive. Or at the very least, put the swap file on the newer drive.
