Problems like this have been solved by reloading the operating system in repair mode, without reformatting the hard drive, without losing the files. Look for the fourth post from the top in Tom's XP forum. It has directions.
A bios problem may be cured following the manufacturer's directions, look up your motherboard by model number, go to the manufacturer's website, if it is Intel, they provide a bios update that can be run in windows.
Don't update the bios unless you have tried re-installing the XP system in repair mode first. Bios update should be done when nothing else will work.
