I have a Dell 4600c desktop
The hard drive is corrupt (ATA), so I installed a new one. (PATA 160GB)

I cannot get past the error message to install Windows XP

OS mode enabled. limited memory 256GB, press F1------ or 2 F2-------

What do I do?

Press F2 because that should get you into your BIOS or Setup menus. In the first page, you should be able to see if the hard disk is being recognised and if it's not, try auto-detecting it.

A: The problem was that the CD was not being recognized keeping me from installing windows.

I checked the connection wires to the CD player!(CD player was not plugged in completely)
After that, the CD was recognized.
Pressing F12, reboot from CD, Windows is now installed.
