Recently the fan on my brothers HP pc fell off. He decided to glue it back onto the CPU. We now need a new CPU but i'm not sure what Socket the MOBO is. I'm assuming it's 775 but i see i have another option of 478. Before i make the purchase, how can i find out exactly what socket our Pentium 4 2.8 HT CPU is?

Thanks.

Look at the socket itself, if the motherboard has pins it is LGA775 if the CPU has pins it is Socket 478.

^Agreed. You might want to consider upgrading during the X-mas season.

CPUZ will tell you in 3 seconds

^ yep. CPUz to know for sure. You should still email HP support. They will tell you what CPUs your board will support. I just went thru the same thing. I have a HP. I was able to go from a p4 to a Pentium D 920. So, you MAY be able to get a much better processor. My mobo is an Asus, but they would not help me because it was made for HP. HP will be the best place to get exact compatibility info. If it is a socket 775, you MAY have some good choices.

I would almost state it is a 478 since the 775 series P4's would be called by a number such as 520(which is the 2.8GHz version of the 775 P4).

But yea best to use CPUz as it will tell you but I am betting it will be a 478.

BTW, every few seconds, the multipler changes from x12 to x14. Beats me why! doesnt seem to effect anything on the system though!!

There is a sticky at the top of the forum about that, it's called SpeedStep. :kaola:

Your rite but given the reading on my sytem info, I thought that the Speedstep would go between x14 and x7 to give me 1.4GHz. Is that a minimum value? (I'm confused but thats because I did too much LDS at Berkley) :)
