When I enter my email account on hotmail and open a new message or reply, a message comes up saying the program will be operating outside protected mode. At that point the whole page freezes and I am unable to continue.

Try resetting your browser security settings to default. In I.E., it's Tools, Internet Options, Security, Reset settings button.

Seems like a really logical solution, but I'm afraid, when I tried it, the problem still occured.....

Add the hotmail web address to Trusted Sites, and check security for that zone to make sure Protected Mode is disabled, see if that works. You'll should close and open the browser after this.
