gateway laptop says there is no disk in the drive when i want to format it

Maybe the media is not compatible with the drive. Try using a different brand of media or visiting the mfrs' website to see if there is a firmware update for your drive.

Look to see if the disc is scratched or smudged. You can use a few drops of water and a soft cloth to clean the disc.

If that doesn't help, the laptop's optical drive may be dead.
