I have a 2x5 internal USB pinout on my MB, and bought a 3.5" multicard reader that attaches to it. The problem is that my 3.5" bay is too far from the motherboard, so I bought an internal extender cable on Ebay. Unfortunately, the vendor listed it as an extender cable (which I think of as male-female) but sent me a female-female instead (the picture on ebay was too small/fuzzy to realize in advance that it was the wrong type).
So, I need to find a cheap source for a male-male adapter, either 2x5 or two 1x5s that are thin enough to fit next to each other. It doesn't even have to be a cable, just the adapter with hard pins on either side.
I've done multiple searches on Google but haven't found anyone that sells this type of thing in the US.
The best thing you can do is to cut the original wires about 1 inch from the end and solder in some new wires to fit the length. I have done this for a USB header, and as long as you keep the wires connected right it shouldn't be a problem.
I would agree that cutting the original wire and adding extra length would be the easiest way to go about this. I had to due something similair with a fan controller a couple years ago and it was no problem. Probably the best thing to use would be a regular USB cable with the ends cut off and cut to the length you want.
Excellent- while they didn't have the direct adapter, their whole-cable (male-to-female) was so cheap I just decided to replace the one I had that was female-to-female.
A more limited selection but at much, much better pricing is available from General NanoSystems, Inc., www.nanosys1.com Search Cables & Adapters > USB Cables
Old thread, found it on Google. Just wanted to say thanks for the Nanosys link. I needed an internal USB 2.0 A Male to IDC 5 Male (Single Row) Adapter Cable and Nanosys had them for $6 cheaper than Performance PCs.
