My old PC died and after reading lots I came up with this build below with the intention of keeping it for 1+ year and then upgrade to Penryn-based system.
Please critisize as harsh as you can with what I'm missing/doing wrong/help me pick a better part
CPU: E2160/2180. I'm going to OC to 3GHz, does it matter which one I get? The price difference is only like $10. E2160 has a 9x multiplier and E2180 has a 10x multiplier. Which one would be better for OCing purpose?
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. Is this board a good candidate for OCing the CPU I picked? My budget here is $100-$150. I'm not looking for SLI or crossfire or anything fancy. I just want a MB with good OC ability and stability.
Memory: Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4 I picked this because of its price $66.67 after $40 MIR, and its 4-4-4-12 spec. Would I be able to achieve 1:1 FSB/Memory with 3.0GHz OCed E2160/2180?
Video: Galaxy GeForce 8800GT 600MHZ 512MB. Again I picked this because of the price $228.88 after $20 MIR. I game occasionally and I don't need top of the line stuff, just something stable and runs cool.
Case and PSU: Antec Sonata Plus 550 Mid Tower ATX Case. I picked this because it looks nice and is very quiet. The case is 16.7"(H) x 8.1"(W) x 18.2"(D). Will it be big enough for my setup?
Heatsink: Scythe Ninja Plus REV.B Just three questions here: 1) Will this fit into the case? 2)Will this fit into the case with a fan added? 3) Do I need this for OC?
Scythe Ninja Plus REV.B is an awesome cooler. Got one for my E6400. It will fit into that case. I have a mid tower that is probably the same size if not smaller so you should be good to go with that. I also had a fan on mine that fit fine into the case, though when I was doing usm **** with my pc I forgot to put the fan on. Still works good though. If you are going to OC then yes, deff get it. No question. Stock intel hsf arent too great for high OCing. The processor is fine. It doesnt matter which one you get. All processors have a different max OC because it depends how 'good' the chip is. Either one will do. For a PSU, I and probably everyone else willl tell you not to skimp on the PSU. A **** PSU can cause major problems like stability issues. I would reccomend a better PSU from Corsair or pcpower&cooling or w/e the **** its name is. So yea, idk how good that PSU is because the PSUs that come with cases are most of the time real ****. Everything else looks good to me unless I missed something. Good luck
And dont forget a CD/DVD drive if you need one. And an OS. nd when you get everything together and running dont forget to change tthe fan speed on the 9900GT. It comes at like around 30% or sumtin. Increase it

I've read a few reviews on the Antec HE Neo 550W PSU that came with the case, and they are all positive ones. Is the one you recommended much better than the Antec?
If so, I can go with the Antec Solo case with no PSU and then get the Corsair for $200, $50 more than the one I had in mind.
And E2180 it is then
Could you guys comment on the motherboard, memory, and video card? I'm not sure if the ones I picked are good or not?
Don't change a thing. Love the case. The Antec psu is fine.
Yes, the scythe ninja will fit in the case. My last solo case had a ninja with a fan. It was a close fit, but no problem. One piece of advice: Put in the memory before mounting the fan for the heat sink, the sink may jut out over the top of the first stick. In fact, I would mount the ninja and fan outside of the case to be certain that the push pins are all fully through the mobo.
Shadow, you have the DS3L board too. It's nice to see you can OC the CPU to 3.2GHz@1.325V. Question: What memory speed do I need to match the OCed CPU?
And isn't the Scythe ninja for the CPU?
geofelt thanks for the advice, and good to know you like the case too!
Actually, you will be better off with the Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 RAM. Newegg has it for about $50 after rebate. It OCs awesome. I don't know if ncix has it though...
Oh yeah, and going with DDR2-since the 1066 doesn't offer much better performance, and the Crucial Ballistix will OC fine, plus with tighter timings, you will end up with better performance (I.E. when over clocking the DDR2-800, you might have to raise the CL to 5. With the 1066 CL5, you might have to raise it to CL6...) Make sense?
So how much more performance roughly would I see going from DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15 to DDR2-880 4-4-4-12 for OCing purpose? What about compare to DDR2-800 4-4-4-15?
Get the 800 ram. Some boards dont like the 1066 very well. For a 3.0 with the e2180 your FSB will need to be 300, your ram will be 600 at 1:1. It should hit 3.0 on stock HS. My e2180 is 3.34 on stock HS.
