Do the new asus x38 boards get much hotter than the asus 975x boards? Mine currently maxes out at around 35c (p5w64 has tiny heatsink in comparison) The thing that confuses me is that the cheaper p5e seems to have a huge heatsink yet the p5e3's seems to have a smaller one. If they do go 35c+ ill have to get a better case, which will leave me with less funds to splash out on a more expensive board.

The P5E is quit popular and runs fine temp wise, my mobo temp now is 32C and when hardcore gaming gets to 39C for me which is still fine. O and buy the way I'm overclocked (3.2GHz) also with my NorthBridge @ 1.41 Vcore from stock of 1.25 Vcore.

seeing as i dont plan to overclock it would be about the same as my current mb then?
 
Also does the cpu qfan work the same in the bios? Currently mine can be set at silent/optimal/performance but i want to be able to set it more precisely.

 
Yes it will, you would see cooler temps like 29C (for mobo temps) with no overclocking. I don't use Qfan I just let all my fans run at 100% all of the time, even my 8800GTX GPU at 100% all of time. I am a performance kind of guy, always gotta have more.  

no troubles with the temps then. There doesnt seem to be any point in me buying the higher end x38's seeing as they are pretty much the same as the p5e.
 
if i have my zalman 9700nt running without q fan it makes a load of noise & i cant set it at a speed where i can have it running as fast as possible without too much noise becuoptimal is about 500rpm too slow & performance just ramps it to almost full speed.

The smaller the fan the faster it has to spin and the louder it will be. This is why I like CPU coolers that use 120mm fans because you can always choose which fan you want to run however quiet or loud you prefer.
