I just opened my new OCX GameXstrem 700W power supply and figured I'd plug it in to see if it works. It didn't. Shouldn't it power up even if it's not installed in the case?

no it won't power up unless 2 things are done.

1 it has the 2 pins shorted (forget which ones0
Their are plenty of guides on the above google is your friend

2 it is connected to a motherboard with the front panel power switch.
The switch needs to be pressed and the motherboard needs to be properly grounded in the case.

Good. I was worried I had to send it back. That is a BIG relief!

Okay, here I am now. I have the motherboard in, the 24v pin power cord from the psu connected and the 12v psu cpu power cord connected as well. The motherboard is back in the case. No other power connectors are attached at this point. Still no power when I plug it in and hit the switch. Do I need to have the case switch hooked up before it will come on?

Plug it into the wall. Lol. Just kidding I'm sure you did but you said nothing else plugged in. Make sure its set to the right volts on the back.

It should work just with the 24pin plugged in mobo grounded or not. I test mine with a psu tester, just plug it in to a 24 pin tester which is basically the same way as shorting it out.

Definately sounds dead if you voltage on the back is set right.

yes, you need to have the power switch connected and turn it on that way. it won't turn on just by flipping the switch in the back
