Dx11 on Vista if your card is Dx10, how does it work?

Ok, so I have Vista and a DX10 card. I read that Dx11 was released for Vista. How do I get this? Is it an automatic updadte from Microsfot? And how will it run if my videocard is not compatible? Does the system skips the updadte based on my hardware, or is it kept stored for when the videocard is updated?
