Overclocking 5000+ Brisbane

I've never overclocked before. Last night I was looking in the BIOS of my ASUS M2NPV-VM and noticed I could overclock with some automatic settings, so after trying all the settings, I eventually got up to a 10% increase. The temperature was absolutely fine, merely 25-30 degrees C under normal usage. Everything was stable.

Do I have to worry about anything other than CPU core temperature? Are there other components I should be thinking about?

Thanks in advance. :)

You should avoid Motherboard tools for overclocking as they tend to increase voltages above what is needed. If you are content with not knowing what goes on on the background I'd say leave it at 10%. If by any chance you decide to have a serious go at it these tools will help you.

General tools for overclocking.
CoreTemp : http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
cpuid HW Monitor : http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
cpuid CPU-Z : http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Prime95 : http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4363
(make sure you enable "Advanced -> Round Off Checking")
OCCT : http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download

All overclocking should be done in BIOS, with manual control of voltages and frequencies. I gather your chip is not a Black edition so the only way to overclock is raising the HyperTransport frequency.

Try this guide for more info:

There's also a link to a .pdf version here :

Good luck.

Only really worry about temps right now... You should read the sticky on how to overclock AMD. Need to know how it affects NB/SB and memory. With a 10% increase though I wouldn't worry about anything!

Thanks for the replies. I printed out that guide in PDF form and was all ready to get going, until I realised my ASUS M2NPV-VM doesn't allow a lot of the options to be changed. :(

Anyway, I left it on the 10% overclock option and ran Orthos, which failed after about 6 minutes! I moved it down to 8% and Orthos seems to run fine.

So it seems there's no much overclocking potential here... :fou:

Yes, that's a good motherboard. It would also allow for a future upgrade to an AM2+ processor.
Your 5000+ Brisbane processor should be good for up to a 20% overclock. Try boosting the FSB without raising the processor voltage first. Once you reach a speed where it fails, then raise the voltage.

I don't believe I can adjust the voltage on this board. It's quite basic as far as overclocking goes.

Are there any better mATX boards out there that will allow me to do a bit more overclocking?
