Greetings....

I'm looking to purchase a RAID card... in the range of $200-$300. I need it to be RAID 0/1/5 and compatible with Vista64.

This is an area I've never had much dealings with, and up until now I have always used the motherboard RAID drivers.

If someone could steer me in the right direction and what to look for in a RAID card... I would much appreciate it...

Thanks

Greetings,

Thanks for the post but I don't see where this controller is compatible with Vista64...

I take it since I've been pointed toward 3ware products that they are a solid brand name with a quality products?

LSI also makes RAID cards as well.
Note:
1) Software raid cards use CPU
2) SAS/SATA Hardware RAID cards have different number of drives supported.

LSI SATA ONLY: http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/pr [...] index.html
LSI SAS/SATA: http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/pr [...] index.html

Avoid the "Entry line" cards since they use the host CPU for XOR calculations.

LSI is the world leader in RAID HBAs. (They sell to a lot of OEMs)

Adaptec, 3ware, LSI and also Highpoint on the cheaper side.

It would be best to check out OS support on the manufacturers website.

I've been using a 3Ware 9690SA-4I-SGL and 9650SA-16ML on Vista x64 without a single issue for the last few months and I gotta say, performance-wise they are just incredible. The drivers and software on their website is up to date and believe it or not the 3Ware raid driver itself can be easily updated via standard Microsoft Update.

I got the 9650SE-16ML for ~$400 and 9690SA-4I-SGL for ~$250 on eBay. I would highly recommend getting them from eBay if you want to save on the price tag as they are rather expensive. If you have the money, definitely shop around, I've seen better deals on them around the net then you will find on NewEgg or TigerDirect.
