My son chose these parts off of newegg with the intent to overclock. Just checking to make sure he isn't making a mistake as this is his first system. Will he need anything else with this order (cables) or is this all he needs to make it work?

The power supply he has chosen, CoolerMaster, is on tier-5 ("Do not buy" ) of the list at http://www.tomswiki.com/page/Tiere [...] gs?t=anon. He should choose one from tier-3 or better. FSP makes some good modestly priced models. Even with some overclocking, he shouldn't need 650 watts. Amperage on the +12V rail(s) is particularly important, a need which is typically determined mostly by the graphics card. A basic wattage calculator can be found at http://www.extreme.outervision.com [...] rlite.jsp. A quality 450-500W PSU should be fine for him.
If he is planning to overclock, he'll probably want an after-market CPU cooler. The Freezer 7 Pro is a good choice without spending an arm or leg.
Depending on what games he wants to play, he may not be happy with the 7600GT. It isn't a bad card considering its age, but that's just it, it has been surpassed. Depending on his budget, an 8800GT would be really nice, or he might try a HD3850.
He might prefer this Gigabyte mobo instead, since he isn't doing SLI, the GA-P35-DS3L: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 813128059. This board also has more USB headers on it, and S/PDIF, and is cheaper, at $90.
It is a few dollars more, but if he chooses a Retail (rather than OEM) DVD burner, it will include all the software needed to use it. Otherwise, he might be hitting you up for another $30 or so to download a decoder, plus whatever else to get Nero or another burning application.
I also noticed there is no hard drive in his build. Seagate and Western Digital make good drives.

------------------------------ There is ALWAYS a drone. Exactly where, or how many drones you will encounter may vary, but that there will be at least one will not.

Agree With JTT and a few notes.......

The DS3L is on sale at ZIPZOOMFLY for $79.

NewEgg if you use get their Newsletter has the Antec 900 case for $59.
While a bit more than the one your son selected, the 900 is an FANTASTIC case that normally sells for at least twice that price. I would not pass up that deal.

Any of the Corsair PowerSupplies will do fine including the 450w one.
Chek the Reviews at http://www.jonnyguru.com - The best site for PSU info. That will save your son a little cash.

You can also likely find some DDR2-800 modules with rebates to save another $10-$15 dollars.

If he can find the money, this card is a big step up.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814127284 and not too price with rebate.

There were a couple 1950Pro cards open box for $99 which are even faster. Those are probably the best cards until you get to the $170 range for the 3850 cards.

Oh, One more thing.

The E4500 is a great CPU for the price, but if you son has a tight budget, he is really better off getting the E2160 and overclocking that.
Take the $50 or so and put that into the Graphics card.

Reply to zenmaster

Also, if he does not plan to overclock, might look into the AMD side of things, as by and large you tend to save money on the boards, and you can still get a quick chip for less than that intel. Then you could go back, and grab that 3850 the guys are talking about which would blow that 7600gt out of the water. The thing to realize, it's not always about speed but about balance. If you have the fastest chip and a junk video card and want to game, then you wasted your time. If someone else comes along with a midrange or better video card and a mid range, or even low end chip and more memory and wants to game, their system will likely game better because video and memory are more important for games than cpu in my opinion. Although you still want at least a dual core.

Also, do you plan on doing dual video cards later, if so that mobo is a waste, b/c it's made for dual graphics cards. Save your money there and put it into something better elsewhere. Graphics for example.

To recap the others, it'll all work just fine, but he might get more bang for his buck if he chooses some other parts. The only thing of concern is the power supply, which should be swapped out. I suggest the Corsair VX450
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139003

If I were to build a budget gaming computer for Christmas, I'd buy the following (parts at newegg unless otherwise mentioned):
Corsair VX450 $80->$70
Intel C2D E2160 $83 (this overclocks very well, and is quite a bit cheaper)
Antec 900 case $99->59 (note: see http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] case-sale)
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L $90
8800GT-256 $230->220 (unless he has a really nice monitor, 256MB is probably plenty) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150263 (comes with a free game for $20->$10 more than a lower clocker version, XFX is a good brand)
Same DVD burner $29
A DATA Extreme Edition 2x1 GB DDR2-800 memory $50-$35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820211174

That's $661->$586 plus shipping, the current system is $527->$457, so it's around $130 to $140 more expensive. Places to cut out cost are the power supply (Antec Earthwatts 430 is around $60 and is also fine), and the graphics card. If your son really wants to game a lot with new titles, I would find it difficult to recommend anything below the HD3850 ($180, any brand), though lesser cards would suffice. The current recommended buy (http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/03/best_graphics_card/page2.html) for more like $100 is the HD2600XT or the GeForce 8600 GT GDDR3.

I hope this helps!

Looks Nice. I think your son will be Merry.

How about this list....I saved a lot of stuff for you that he already likes.

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersio [...] 11-119-047

This is an AMD system, not intel, if he does not plan to overclock, it would make a fine pc I think. Plus has capability to accept the new quad core Phenom processors, so whenever they get the bugs worked out of that then there you go.

By the way, had to add a hard drive, looks like you forgot one.... But take a look at that system, I think it would perform a lot better than the one you had priced out for his games as that card should thrash the 7600gt.

Ooops, just saw that he plans to overclock, then if he likes the AMD setup, he might consider the 5000+ x2 black edition and an aftermarket cooler.

Reply to ohiou_grad_06

Oh one more thing....If he plans to OC, let the CPU run stock for at least a week or 2, gives all the thermal paste and the chip time to burn in. And being his first system, he may decide he does not need to OC until later.

Edit:whew, caught it, accidentally double posted things on my list, it was up to 900+ dollars, a little high perhaps.

That link doesn't work for me...

Hmm, I did mark it as shared...sorry about that....here it is.....

Coolermaster case, 34.99, free shipping

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6811119115

Biostar AM2/AM2+ Board=69.99(Anyone else have ideas on AM2+ boards?)

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6813138081

Diamond ATI Radeon 3850 256mb video card 179.99(This would pretty well spank that 7600)

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6814103049

Seasonic 500 watt Powersupply regular 99.99, on sale at 69.99(Perhaps someone else can show you a better deal there though)

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6817151040

AMD Athlon 4600 x2=79.99, again might consider the 5000 x2 black edition and aftermarket cooler if he wants to do a lot of overclocking. But I was looking at this one so you could save a little $$ and put more into the video card, and still be ok on processing power. Then he can always overclock, or upgrade later.

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6819103751

2gb Wintec AMPX ddr2 pc6400 memory=41.99(Again though, I'm sure the mushkin you picked would work great as well, this was just a little cheaper, and I have not had problems with Wintec Ampo memory, seems to work good on a budget for me.

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6820161030

250gb Seagate Barracuda hard drive, with 16mb cache=64.99

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6822148144

Then of course the DVD burner you picked...

http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6827136120

Like someone else said, might consider spending a little more for a retail version so you get all the software you need and everything.

Total came out to 569.93

Not counting shipping.

Oh yes, one more thing, do not forget to include some case fans for cooling.
