hey i am looking for a good external hard drive and since alot seem to have problems w/ the drives themselves i decided to go w/ an external enclosure and a new hard drive that i can trust
external enclosure: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193055
Hard drive:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284
the only thing i am worried about is heat. will this hard drive over heat in this external unit or any unit for that matter. also are there any GOOD external enclosures that have esata, usb 2.0 and 1 touch backup capabilites b/c the ones i saw where either cheap or had some wiring problem
for example, this one would have been perfect if it had sata 3.0 and not sata 1.5: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817801017

anyway thanks for the help

Heya,

Your drive, externally, will not overheat even without a fan. It's just nice to have a fan. You're talking about a simple 7200rpm drive. It's not going to get that hot.

As for externals with problems; it's not like there are `generic' drives (and if you look at model numbers, you can find out what drive is actually used; lots use WD, hitachi, etc). Look at Fantom Drives, they use the exact WD you're looking at. I have a 1tb fantom drive that uses a WS 1tb drive in it; it's frigg'n awesome. And it's cool to the touch all the time, even after heavy use. $119 for the whole setup. I use eSATA with it (and it supports usb 2.0).

You're going to spend more getting your own drive and own enclosure; and realize that it didn't make any difference. Seriously, if you want that hard drive in a good external setup, look at Fantom Drive products.

Very best,

alright thank you that helped alot
i may get a fantom drive but the other reason i did not mention why i liked the external enclosure is that i may end up using it as an internal drive later and would like to mount in in my case at that point
still i may get the fantom anyway and just live with it outside my case w/ an esata cable
again thanks i waited quite a while for some help...no one saw it the first time around....
