Hi.
I have a WD sata disk with windows xp pro on it.
I want to buy a 2nd identical disk and set up raid 1 for safety reasons.
Is it possible to set up raid 1 without formating my existing drive and just add the 2nd disk and make it work??
Thanx in advance.
RAID 1 is not a backup, nor is there anything safe about it.
It is for redundacy. It is used in servers and systems that CANNOT be offline for any reason. If a disk fails, the system will continue to run on 1 disk while the other is being replaced.
RAID 1....... you or someone else deletes a file, it's gone. Virus attacks? Both drives now have it. Power spike, or you decide to overclock and your data is corrupted, it happens on both drives.
All RAID 1 will protect against is if 1 drive physically fails.
So anyway now that you have read that and still want RAID 1, yes you can do it.
When you build the array, it will ask you (or it should) if you want to do a disk copy, select yes. Then it will ask you to point to the drive with data you want copied, select of course the drive with your data on it. Then it should confirm with that you want to rebuild with the source disk.
I very highly suggest to make a backup to another drive BEFORE messing around with a RAID controller. It is very easy to do the wrong thing and INSTANTLY loose everything on your data drive.
