Best External Drives

I'm looking to get an external drive for my son who is in college for Christmas. The only requirements I have is that it does not require an external ac adapter and is esata/usb. Does that mean it must be a 2.5" drive? Also does anyone have any recommendations for drives I should check out? Thank you for the help!

I havent seen a 3.5" drive that doesnt require a power connector yet... so you might only be able to choose from 2.5

Dont hold me to it, but i think to get eSATA to work you have to have some other kind of power (adapter or USB power) not sure how this is supported on external drives.
