Greetings,

I want to build a new system that would run Vanguard and Age of Conan very well. I want it to also to be "upgradable" for future processors/VGAs (PCI 2.0? Mobo that is compatible with future processors and RAM..etc). I have a 22' monitor so I want to take advantage of that. I also don't feel comfortable with overclocking.

What I have in mind is:

1. Processor is the E6850 3.0ghz (is the price difference between this and the E6750 really worth it for games?)

2. nVidia 8800 GT 512mb (or a 8800 GTS 512mb) <-- is there a better ATI option? (would SLI give me a 50% performance push? in other words, is SLI worth it?)

3. 2x 2gb RAM 800mhz (not sure which brand)

4. SATA HDD WD 7200rpm 500gb

5. SATA DVD writer Samsung

6. ThermalTake case (not sure which model)

7. Some decent PSU. Is BFG good? because the OCZ options are very limited (only the 1000w ones available). Is ThermaleTake PSU good? because there is a 500w version of it.

8. Motherboard = ????? <-- need help here

9. Xfi Xtreme Gamer sound card

What do you guys think?

1. Processor - if not over clocking, this is fine, if not ideal. You'll maybe have suggestions for the quads, but for games, this is fine. Also, be prepared for the onslaught of recommendations for much cheaper CPUs that can be over clocked to the same speed. If your over clocking, great, buy something cheaper, if not, then it doesn't apply to you.

2. 8800GTS512 is also fine. Get this over the ATI 38x0 cards, assuming prices are not discounted on the ATIs where you are. SLI and Crossfire are all about diminishing returns. Forget about SLI/Crossfire to start with, just pick the best card you can afford. If you find some cash left in the budget before purchasing for a SLI/Crossfire board and a second card, then ok.

The increase for SLI depends on the game and game settings. Some will see no improvement in. You are spending 100% on a second card for 0-50% extra performance (diminishing returns).

ok, my rigs a little old, well before any hint of 8800GTS512s, but currently P5N32-SLI 680i, E6750 @ 3.0GHz, 2 x 8800GTS320s SLI, 4 x 1GB 800MHz SLI-certified RAM, RAID0 2 x WD320GB, Vista 64-bit, etc, makes me happy enough :D I am waiting for the next "best thing" after the GTS512.

8. you really, really need to decide on SLI/Crossfire first, because the SLI criteria will probably be the greatest reducer of choice in the motherboard department, the followed by Crossfire. Ultimately, if you do not want multiple GPUs, then you have the choice of 100% of the LGA775 boards with 1 x PCI-E 16x.

Choose Crossfire, and the 775 motherboard field drops a bit in size. Choose SLI, and the field drops a lot.

If you want the latest mobos, either 780i or X38. Both support PCI-E 2.0 & 45-nm cpu's. The 780i does SLI. The X38 supports DDR3 & Crossfire at x16. They're the best & latest.

FWIW, 680i doesn't do 45-nm Yorkfield cpu's.

Yup, 1st make up your mind on SLI/Crossfire, then tell us if you plan to go dual video cards. Until then, we can't recommend any psu's.

hehe just a kid you dont' need waste moeny like that .
en~~~~ you just need one 88GT is enough for many games(except for Crysis) 680i + 6550 would @ 3G , 4xddr2 800

About the Upgradability....

When the new Nehalms (end of next year) come out all upgradability for the current boards (including X48) will die. :( This is because Intel is switching to a new platform which includes a IMC, DDR3 native support, and the socket types will be different.
