Hi

I have a Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 Motherboard but have yet to purchase a CPU cooler as I am still making up my mind on what would be the best one to get. What I am wondering is this:

If I purchase the "Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme Heatsink" for my particular motherboard and my Intel quad core, do I need to also purchase the AM2 metal backplate or will the heatsink work right out of the box? I am not sure whether I need to purchase the backplate or not as it says the following on Thermalrights website:

"Motherboard compatibility List
(Both Ultra-120A and Ultra-120 eXtreme do not include a backplate for AM2&AM2+ systems. If you have motherboard manufactured by either Asrock or Gigabyte that utilizes the push pin method, you will need to make a separate purchase for an AM2 metal backplate.)"

Please help.

Thanks.

Yeah, I am a little confused as well.

You said you want an Intel Quad.... then why do you have AMD compatibility concerns?

No, you do not require the AM2 backplate.

You do need to get a fan though, it does not come with one...It is passive.

As to what fan to use, I've use a Noctua fan on my TRUE and its so quiet that I can't hear it. I like that, as I like silence.

+1 for don't need to worry about AMD compatibility as yours is an intel mobo.
+1 for the TRUE, you need a seperate fan.

get two quiet 120mm fan for better cooling and lower noise compare to 1 high speed fan.

Thanks guys. I just wasn't completely sure and wanted to make sure.

I want to get the Xigmatek S1283 but I live in Australia and I can't seem to find it anywhere at all so I thought I would either go for the Arctic Freezer Pro 7 or the Thermalright. My case is the Antec 900 and I've heard the TRUE doesn't fit to well in the case without a bit of modding.

Is the Arctic Freezer Pro and good for a little overclocking, say a Q9450 to 3.0GHz or maybe some more?

A Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme would be great for Q9450. Bye

+1 for the Q9450 i have that cpu on the X48 DS4 with a true 120 and it fits fine in my antec 900, only issue is i have it twisted about 10 degrees to the right so that my intake fan on the side panel doesnt vibrate agains the fan on my true120
