I have been thinking about upgrading HD storage on one of my computers. So I went to newegg to see what is available. I looked at the reviews and it seems like there are a lot of DOA and premature failures in all the manufacturers.

I realize that the reviews are skewed toward the low end of ratings. Someone who buys a drive that is troublefree may or may not take the time to write a review. Someone who gets a drive with problems almost certainly WILL write a bad review.

What has been the experience with 1 TB drives here?

Just got a Hitachi from newegg a few weeks back. Works fine. Runs hot enough to melt the plastic couplings on the $15 external case I got with it.. oh well.

Also noisy as hell. I guess 5 motorized arms will do that. Or is it 7? It's a lot. You can hear it at night bzzzt bzzzt bzzzt

Still, it's a lot of ummm, er.... videos and uh, things you can put on it.

Hitachi i think were the first to release one and it use 5 platters...

The new drives from Seagate and WD are based on 3 and 4 platters so they are alot quieter and run cooler also alot quicker.

If you want silent but less speed get the Green WD its spindle speed is lower. If you want Speed then get the Black.

Drives these days come with 3-5 years warranty so they are reliable. The new 1.5tb seagate apparently has some issues.
