Hi everyone
I have a 8600GT that I bought with my new build until I could upgrade to a better one. Anyway that was a couple months ago and now I have noticed that it is making high pitched noises when I play games and then freezes and crashes. The games I play are NWN2, COD 4,Crysis (obviously on low), SW empire at war, NFS prostreet. Every thing except for Crysis I play on 1280x1024 on my 19 inch monitor. The Card is Gigabyte silent pipe 2 with 256 DDR3 and bundled with Neverwinter nights 2.
Help is appreciated.
Really high pitch, like it's, in time, coming down into your hearing range? Could be a bad switching regulator on the PCB. Look for a cold solder joint on an inductor or capacitor. Could be a bad ground ->Simply put<- Under load, the regulator IC begins to oscillate its pulse width in the audible range. It's frequency modulation. (Like FM, I'm not talking the IC's switching frequency. That's way too high to hear.) The inductor turns the modulation into sound.
