Well if it were as strong as they said, all of Asia should have felt it

The answer to this question can be predicted by past responses. He wants
MONEY!

Actually - donating to a relief fund, would be a noble thing to do

He lives in a big city is Malaysia, that is all I know.

From this news article, I would say he is probably OK

2886 but keep in mind he only has USENET access from work, so it would make

That would be very difficult without my old ICQ chat logs.

I don't even know what city he lives in.

What useful information come from Usenet headers? Hmmm.

Very scary that whole thing :[

Richter 9 out of a possible 10 ... sheesh. I wonder what that would have
been like if it were on land instead of under the ocean. I imagine worse
for all the fires etc.

Best wishes for the survivers :/

It's not actually even on the richter scale. The richter scale
saturates around magnitude 6, which makes in innacurate for quakes
above that magnitude. These days they use moment magnitude scale which
has no theoretical limit, though the largest physically possible given
the actual stresses rocks and earth can take would probably be
somewhere between 9.5 and 11.

It sounds as if the worst part of this quake were the enourmous
tsunamis generated; they killed over ten thousand in sri lanka and at
least 7000 in India, probably more than that. Being centered just
slightly offshore of Indonesia probably didn't prevent much land
damage, although a quake of this magnitude certainly could've killed
at least 5 to 10 times as many people if it had been centered on a
very large urban city center, such as tokyo or something.

Not really, apart from the 'minor' tremor we felt on Sunday, 9.04am. All the
residents however evacuated the apartment though. I thought I was having a
blackout as I was squatting to reach for something but can't manage to grab
hold of it.

Indonesia, India and Sri Langka were the worst being hit, I think. AFAIK, 51
deaths were recorded for Malaysia and the weird thing is that some of the
dead weren't swimming or anything. They were merely taking a stroll at the
beach when it happen.

Unconfirmed reports in the newspaper says that at its peak the waves were as
high as a 2-5 storey apartment.

Good thing you're alright - I was about to look for a phone card, to try to
call G-Tek, which unless I'm greatly mistaken, is the place you for?

Thanks, I'm fine. But like Luc said, money would help and I'm sure there are
funds being raised for this major catastrophe. Help what you can.

News reported that almost 9,000 perished and the number is increasing as
some of them are still lost.

Oh that's nothing, I was about 20 minutes away from going to go buy a phone
card and call your business. I still think a "Luc called me" thread would
