Hi all... I have put together a new system a few days ago and have been getting some temp issues. Everyone says CoreTemp is correct, so I am sticking to that, since TAT and CoreTemp seem to give similar results. Anyways, I have reseated the stock HS numerous times. I know I need a better HS, but still... shouldnt be this hot this fast. I just took it out and did the grain of rice thing like Arctic recommended, but it hasnt done much for me. (I felt HS, not hot to the touch after the minute render... should it be pretty warm? or does it take longer at higher temps to feel...)

I have a 80mm intake, 120mm exhaust, CPU fan blowing downwards, 100% at all times. And 80mm side intake to help bring cool air to CPU fan. Not O/Cin (well, mobo has option to let me 'cruise' so cpu runs about 2.6ghz instead of 2.4, but I know people are OCing this thing higher on air with lower temps) Other than that, I have changed nothing. All stock. Heres a pic of CPU usage, and temps in different programs. How hot should the cores run? Should I be concerned, or should I only look at CPU temp? I heard that the threshold for this chip (Mine is B3) is 62C... I am guessing that is overall chip temp, not for the cores? but still some people post much lower core temps on air... and even oc'd i have seen lower... any help would be appreciated.

THESE ARE WITH CASE OPEN AFTER 1 MIN OF 100% CPU USAGE (4 cores maxed)

Hmm, have you cleaned off your HSF each time you reseated? Are you using the stock cooler?

I have a q6600 G0 stepping processor running at 3.0 Ghz, with idle temperatures ranging from 34-43 degrees. Running at 100% CPU load for about 45 minutes raises the temperatures to 58-60 degrees. I use an arctic cooler pro heat sink fan, and have been running with no problems for almost a month.

I think you should put the processor back to stock settings 2.4Ghz with the proper FSB and stock voltages then compare the temperatures with other q6600 b3 processors to see if it is operating within normal range. If it isn't then it is probably a heat sink issue, you may want to try an arctic cooler heat sink, it already has thermal paste on it, and is super easy to install.

Yes its stock heatsink and the I have not changed the FSB or anything. Just the cruise lets the cycles increase 5-7%, so I get 2600mhz instead of 2400mhz, so that is not really OCing... voltage and all are set to auto, and its 1.264 according to CPU-Z 1.40.5 so that is stock...
I have cleaned the HSF everytime, and used different methods of applying... Should I apply to both CPU and HS, or just one? when i take the HSF off, I dont see any areas that might have been a bad connection. I ran a razor over HSF and CPU and both look pretty darn flat... I am not going to lap either as of now, as I have never done it before... that will be my LAST resort... and I doubt it would help, considering something else is up...

I guess I will try to replace the HSF, people say the stock one sucks, but these temps are bad even for the stock. Im gonna try to reseat it now with a new layer of some silicon paste instead of the stuff I was using before.

i ran the Zalman CNPS9700 for a while before water cooling and it certainly did its job well. either try that or maybe just the older revision is a little finicky.

Hi. Try a better termal paste. Make sure the cooler is well positioned. You should not have more then 35 degrees. How many fans do you have inside your case for puling the heat out? I think that there is something wrong with the way it was inserted. I am using a Q6600 Box and I have around 30 degrees. I also have two big fans for releasing the heat.

Perhaps an aftermarket heatsink will make it better.

35 degrees C for what? CPU temp overall? My idle cpu temp is 37C... Cores now, doing nothing CPU intensive are 54C 50C 47c 47C, which i know are high... Think im gonna try reseating again, this time using better paste and a diff method... and Im gonna turn the HS 90 degrees, havent tried that yet, but people say it could help since they are made convex/concave

1 80mm intake in front, 1 80mm intake in side, blowing directly into CPU fan, which is blowing down into HS, and 1 120mm outtake, which is taking PSU heat, which is blowing into CPU HS... is that right for my PSU to blow its heat into CPU HSF? thats the only way it mounts, so I hope it is... all cords tucked away, and case is closed when used... so airflow should be pretty good...

PSU should not be blowing onto your CPU. PSU's get hot... the PSU fan should be blowing the air outside. If you are unsure of direction of airflow (using your hands is not a good indicator) use a piece of tissue paper or something very light to see which direction the fan blows it.

It is possible to put too much past on.
The paste is only for the parts of the heat sink and processor that don't touch metal to metal. No paste made will conduct better than metal to metal. Even if they are perfectly flat, under a microscope there are holes and scratches.
The paste should be as thin as possible while still getting an even coat.
