I just recently purchased an 'unlocked' motorola t720 phone from ebay. I
was curious to know how he went about unlocking it. I should have asked
the seller BEFORE I paid for it, but I didnt. He replied that he
'bought it unlocked'. He had it with cingular and got it about 2 years
ago.. I thought all phones were locked to their carrier. Is it possible
he only THINKS its unlocked? Or does/did cingular sell unlocked phones?

I will be asking him more about it, I just thought I may get more of an
honest answer here.

I unlocked my T720g it was an ATT phone one way to check it is when you open
the phone check the outside display it should say MOTOROLA on it.
Cingular didn't sell any T720's unlocked, in order to unlock a T720 you
would need to do a flash and flex that will unlock and unbrand the phone
I would take a guess and say that he thinks its unlocked

the outside does not change when you unlock a phone..
if you buy a at&t phone and unlock it with a code it will still say at&t all
over it.

you can purchase unbranded phones from ebay that are unlocked and
unbranded.. those will say motorola.

he probably got it unlocked from putting a code into the phone.
its easy to get the codes and only costs a little bit.

My unlocked T720 from Cingular still displays "Cingular" on the outside
display when it is open. That was last year using an ATTWS SIM.
