when i analyze each hard drive with the default windows xp defragmenter, each hard drive usually looks like this: small blue block, somewhat large free/white space, rest. what the hell is this white space reserved for? the MFT?

I forgot what the default XP defrag screen looks like, since I've been using Diskeeper for so long and never even had to do a defrag analysis lol.
But IIRC, if there is a bit of green before the white expanse, then it is indeed the MFT allocation zone, and the green is the actual MFT itself. if there is no green, then probably, it's just free space that was not compacted by the defragger.
