I am running an E6600 right now, and am itching to upgrade. Would simply upgrading to a Q6600 be a good choice or should I save up more money for the Q6700?

Well i were in the same situation and kept my E6600 and OC'd it, i say dont upgrade it just OC your CPU and wait a little more for 45nm QuadCores to come out and then upgrade

Yes Maziar is right , considering the fact that E6600 usually overlocks better , and you don't use 4 cores unless you do alot of video work.

Sounds like some good advice, thanks guys. How much longer do we have on the 45nm chips?

Core 2 Duo I think are still on track to be released in the next couple of weeks (Jan 20th) apparently. The quad cores have been pushed back to march I think.

I was looking at the phenomenal gpu speeds compared to price on the 8800gt until I realized all the ones newegg had were pcie 2.0. Do you think this will become the new standard? I hope not, I was hoping not to have to upgrade my mobo for a while.

mmmm... that would really be 50/50 for me. To be honest I would choose the one you WANT to upgrade at the moment. Theres not that much that an E6600 and 8800GTS can't handle at the moment so it's kind of which ever one you want to upgrade the most.

If it was me I would probably get a new CPU as there are also meant to be new GPU's coming out (9800 series) later on this year.

Keep in mind that a quad core will not mean instant performance increase.

If a program (game, or app) is not programmed to be multi-threaded instead of simply dual threaded, the extra cores will not be taken advantage of.

Read the following article to determine if a quad core suits your needs:

There is no such thing as a stupid question.
But there are stupid people.
