Measuring temps?

Since my GPU is finally coming via UPS today, I should have my new build up and running this evening. This will be my first attempt at overclocking, so I bought an aftermarket cooler for the CPU. I want to be able to see what kind of temperatures I'm getting both at standard clocking and overclocking. How do you guys go about getting your temperature readings? Do you use the motherboard software? I heard this is very inaccurate, but don't have any first hand knowledge.
