Anyways so heres my newegg build. Replace the core 2 i have now with a penryn, i only put it there for price. I am using my current 8600gts in this build and a 24 inch monitor. I had a question regarding internet. does the asus wi-fi support vista 64-bit? i plan on getting it and im moving to college where there is wifi and i was wondering if it did, otherwise i would get a gigabyte board and a wireless pci card.

I think the wifi should work with 64. I was using it on my old asus mobo without any issues but check on Asus's website just in case. You can download the wifi ap on their site.

He'd better be in the USA because Newegg won't ship elsewhere. :)

I'd replace the PSU with a Corsair 550VX.

The E6320/Zalman combo is fine, except that Zalmans tend to get noisy under load and cost too much for my taste. I'd get the E6750+Arctic Freezer combo from newegg.

Edit: I missed the part where you said you weren't actually going to get the E6320, but waiting for Penryn. Keep in mind that Penryn has been delayed and it might take a while. If you can wait, I'd recommend a Q9450 (assuming it is indeed $316 or close as expected). It will be overkill for most games, at least in the first year, but it's more future-proof than dual cores.

CoolerMaster is on tier-5 ("Do not buy") of the PSU listing at http://www.tomswiki.com/page/Tiered+PSU+Listings?t=anon
The Corsair aevm would choose would be excellent (if it is back in stock). Otherwise, choose one from tier-3 or better.

If you want / need the software required to watch movies or otherwise get good use out of your optical drive, get a Retail rather than OEM version.

And yes, the e6320 is a confusing choice. If you want something temporary, get a e21xx for a lot less.

I also like the Silencer 610W, if the 550VX is hard to find.

That's an interesting question, about the OEM drives and software. I bought an LG GSA-H62N, clearly labeled OEM, from a local shop in Ottawa (www.shoprbc.com). Cheap at $31. If it didn't have rip-lock I'd say it's a fantastic burner, in fact. It did come with a lot of software: Nero Express 7, Power DVD 7, InCD (that's some stuff for using rewritables), plus other things I never installed.

On the other hand, I bought a PX-810SA retail, and it didn't even have a SATA cable in the box. It did have Roxio software, but I'm used to Nero and PowerDVD so I didn't bother installing Roxio.

Before you buy a burner, whether OEM or retail, try to find out which software comes with it, if it makes a difference to you.

whats the diff between retail and OEM on optical drives? Im changeing the cpu for a penryn. Im going only dual core, i dont really need a quad core at this point its not worth the extra money. I also forgot to add that i plan on doing a medium overclock on the CPU. Ill take the advice on the PSU i kinda just randomly picked one for price.

Retail sends you all the cables, software, etc. OEM generally means you get a box with your product and that is it. Ex. Retail CPU's come with a manual, CPU Cooler, thermal grease, etc. While an OEM CPU is just the CPU in a little plastic case. That's it.

OEM drives aren't a bad deal if you're getting a new motherboard, since the board it self often comes with plenty of cables for any connection on the board.

Ill take the advice on the PSU i kinda just randomly picked one for price.
Good idea. :) You'll see more as you read around here that 90% of posters recommend a quality PSU. Among other things, the fan in the PSU will remain quiet... I personally have noticed that every cheap RaidMax or whatever often starts to vibrate or make a hideous noise after about a month of use. :p

Vista 64-bit supports most current things. Exceptions are older legacy devices and 16 bit dos programs.

I would strongly suggest that you get 4gb. Vista loves it and memory is the cheapest performancer you can buy.

That Samsung 203 seems to be a good unit, it is sata and quiet. Using vista home premium-64-bit, I have no problem playing dvd's, burning dvd's, or viewing tv using a tuner card and media center. Vista seems to offer all the software functions you need. I am not big into dvd usage, so I might be missing something there. OEM gets you no extras, but you don't need them either.

Get a tier 2 psu. They don't cost any more if you shop. PC P&C silencer610 is good, as are the Corsair 450/550/650 units.

Find out if you will be using wireless B or G or N I don't know which the asus board uses, but you will want the fastest that the school offers you. You will have more flexibility in picking a mobo that might cost less if you use the appropriate wireless add-in card.

I hear that the duo 45nm cpus will be the first out, perhaps as early as feb 20. You might want to wait a bit.

Plan on using an oem cpu cooler. Get one which uses a 120mm fan. It will keep your cpu cooler, and will also be quieter because a slow turning 120mm fan is almost silent.

The case looks good. If you want a quiet case, I have been happy with my Antec Solo.

---good luck---

I picked the corsair 550 for my PSU now. i dont think i have enough money right now for 4 gb. ill upgrade later probably.

oh btw. it seems the asus only supports standard g. with that, i hope to go find another mobo and a wireless card that supports vista. Is there any board of similar price and OC ability out there?
